Ennis Town

        There are many interesting things to do and see to Ennis. Ennis is Clare's Main Town - a picturesque and historic market town. It has narrow streets and a growing reputation as superb, friendly holiday location.

        Ennis has a colourful past and takes its name from "Inis" which is the Irish name for island. The town dates back to the 11th Century and was formed between two streams on the river Fergus when the O'Briens, Kings of Thomond, invited the Franciscans to establish a settlement within thier domain in 1240.

        Over the Centuries Ennis became a thriving market town, which it continues to be today. It is a town that treasures it history and its culture and it is proud to share the past with visitors. History abounds and its monuments and land marks, such as the old Franciscan Friary, add to the great character of the town.

        Ennis is one of Irelands most picturesque towns and it's history, combined with its famous narrow streets and character building, tells the visitor - this is somewhere very special.

        The reputation of Ennis continues to grow. It is a center where what you do all day, simply depends on what you want. The choices are yours. Based in Ennis you can as active or as leisurely a visit as you want.

        Visitors particularly enjoy the range of shopping - including craft shopping and  superb dining options- to suit all tastes. Music dominates, epically traditional music. Ennis is the traditional music Capital of Ireland and the music resounds from many centers, particularly within its famous character pubs.

   Interesting Sights Around Ennis Town

        The Main of Erin Commemorates the death of Nationalists, Allen, Larkin and O'Brien, who were executed in Manchester in 1867 for their part in a Fenian rescue attempt.

        DeValera Library and Museum. Public Library and a general collection of historical artefacts and figures of County Clare, including a 1782 Irish Volunteers flag, Pictures of Arthur Griffith and Daniel O'Connell, RIC and old IRA weapons and land league Banners.

        Ennis Friary. This 13th century Franciscan friary, founded by the O'briens, has numerous 15/16th century sculptures carved in the local hard lime Stone. The visitor can see the figure of St. Francis displaying the stigmata, an elaboratory ornamented screen, a representation of the Virgin and Child and the Ecce Home. The Chancel is lit by the magnificent east window. 

        S.S Peter and Paul Pro-Cathedral. The Cathedral was erected in 1831 two years after Catholic Emancipation.

        O'Connell Monument. Erected in memory of Daniel O'Connell, M.P. for Clare from 1828 to 1831. It was Daniel O'Connell who showed the people of Ireland that much could be achieved by peaceful means.

       Ballyalla Lake.  Short Distance from Ennis on the N18. Riverside park with pinic facilities, toilets and car park. Wild fowl frequent the lake and surrounding grassland.
